Esparza's Tex-Mex Café Description:
Don't let the taxidermy scare you. When you enter this funky and feverish roadhouse and see the bar with its Mexican marionettes, stuffed snakes, and animal skulls with flashing lights for eyes, you know something's cooking. First it's the crowd, always jazzy and jumpy, in a high party mood. Then, of course, it's the Tex-Mex food itself, mean and snappy with attitude. From the cornmeal-dusted fried cactus to rattlesnake tacos, everything is in-your-face with assertive flavors, a dare-me swagger, and personality galore. Even the salsa is terrific here. Joe Esparza cooks with his Texas roots firmly in mind, and smokes the heck out of lamb, brisket, buffalo, turkey, pork loin and snake. He crams these wonderful meats into tacos, burritos and enchiladas, but they can stand on their own, all fiery and earthy-flavored. The well-stocked bar, a Mecca for tequila lovers, beckons with libations to complement the menu.
