Pinawa, Man, town, pop 1500 (2001c), 1672 (1996c), 1806 (1991c), 2078 (1986c), area 128.45 km2, inc 1963. The name of this area was originally "Pinnowak," meaning "calm waters," referring to a route on the WINNIPEG RIVER bypassing the lengthy rapids at Seven Sisters. The Town of Pinawa was created in 1963 for the Atomic Energy of Canada Limited's Whiteshell Laboratories, a research facility. The laboratory includes a nuclear disposal research and development facility built deep in the granitic rock. AECL remains the main employer in the region, but tourism and outdoor recreation are increasingly important sources of employment for area residents. The town is on the northwestern border of WHITESHELL PROVINCIAL PARK, a major recreational area for Winnipeg residents. A golf course and marina are located in Pinawa.
