Bruce Cooper was one of the pioneers who elevated Manayunk from dying-old-town to chic destination. His restaurant is known for its first-rate wine list, a good complement for the fine contemporary American cooking served here. The menu runs the gamut from roast chicken to seared halibut over lobster hash. The apple cider-soy barbecued salmon is a special that people return for time and again, as are the crab cakes and the ancho-espresso grilled filet. Vegetables, such as stir-fries or fried yams, or the lobster mashed potatoes, are interesting and receive the same attention as the entrées. The desserts are as beguiling as the rest of the menu. Consider these temptations: a signature cookie taco with ice cream, caramel and raspberry sauce, and warm chocolate bread pudding with Tahitian vanilla sauce. A four-selection cheese plate is available for those who like to end the meal on a savory note. Cooper bumped out this tiny spot, taking over the space next door for his more casual Cooper's Brick Oven Wine Bar, a bustling trattoria where food from Jake's is also available.
