This neighborly trattoria has attained a loyal following---locals flow in, sometimes with double-kiss greetings. The place feels cozy and stylish, with brightly painted kindergarten chairs dangling from the ceiling and walls that mix textures of brick, wood shingles and fabric to absorb sound. There's a snug, six-stool wine bar, and, past an overflow back room, a deck for hot nights along the Petaluma River. The chef and owner hail from Italy, and the menu celebrates Mediterranean flavors. Begin with goat cheese panna cotta with corn cake and pistachio pesto, lightly seared ahi with fennel or a salad of beets, watercress and dry ricotta. Count on homemade pastas like pappardelle with braised short ribs and a forestful of porcini. Tender veal shoulder rests on folds of prosciutto and crisp potatoes. Portions come massive for dishes like risotto and ravioli, but you won't mind. Salting could be kicked up a bit in general. It's freeing to consider passing on California wines for a change; the helpful staff will steer you to intriguing Italian varietals, including a red and white sampling flight.
