Hiro's Description:
This storefront along Petaluma's vintage downtown dishes up serviceable sushi and rolls in a stylized setting. A black-and-white wood block print of a gulping monster fish provides a behemoth backdrop for the sushi chef team. Opened with much fanfare, in part due to an inspiring presto-change-o exec turned restaurateur, Hiro's magic has dimmed a bit. Still, there's a wide selection of interesting rolls, including the Marilyn Monroll (cucumber, crab, tobiko, daikon sprouts in rice paper hand roll), and the Fire Roll (tuna, green onion, jalapeño with spicy sauce). Miso-marinated black cod soothes, but skip the unnecessarily salt-sprinkled rice accompanying it. The place seems to attract the younger set. One draw may be the noteworthy sakés and Japanese cocktails; the list's educational format reveals a passion to enlighten, and may hark back to the owner's former affiliation with Chateau St. Jean Winery.
