El Kasbah Café Description:
This charming and unpretentious little Moroccan-French café offers a menu that covers the major elements of Moroccan cuisine without venturing too deeply into the strange and challenging. Family owned and operated, it has a comfortable, intimate atmosphere. There are three pastillas (pastries of phyllo dough): chicken, eggs and almonds (the closest to the traditional pigeon version); shrimp, tilapia and vermicelli; and vegetables and vermicelli, tasty with herbs and spices. The tagines include beef, lamb, chicken, shrimp and fish. There are two versions of lamb couscous and from-the-grill beef, chicken or shrimp brochettes, plus lamb chops marinated in the house signature sauce. The classic Moroccan blending of savory and sweet soothes the palate; the tagine Tangier (melting lamb shank with prunes and almonds in a ginger turmeric sauce) and the couscous le Moresque (lamb shank with onions, chickpeas, raisins and a honey sauce) are well worth trying. The medieval orange dessert shouldn't be missed; its bittersweet tang and pudding-like texture pair well with the smooth house-made ice cream.
