Montclair Bistro Description:
Clearly the nicest eatery in Oakland's sleepy Montclair Village, this restaurant plays grown-up with old-school bistro eating in a quaint, Tudor-style home. Service is coddling and sincere, and locals reserve this as a special occasion spot for chef Henry Vortriede's ornate---almost Baroque---Asian-twanged Cal-Med meals. The menu hosts an ever-changing lineup of classic fine dining dishes like tuna tartare in a potent Pollock painting of wasabi cream, and foie gras with scallops in a port reduction sauce. Maine lobster ravioli seems a bit lost in its sea of saffron broth, but it's redeemed by the entrées, including an obscenely large-portioned, well-fried panko-crusted sole with beurre blanc and a tricolor of tobiko caviar; and a bistro-classic steak served atop pommes Anna and thumb-size stalks of asparagus. Desserts include chocolate mousse, panna cotta and a daring crêpes Suzette. A Cab-heavy wine list is a suitable foil.
