Black Mountain Winehouse Description:
There aren't many townhouses with wood siding in Brooklyn, so after a five-minute walk down residential brick-lined Union Street (from Smith Street's restaurant row), you'll know the Black Mountain Winehouse when you see it. The colorful stained-glass windows, wainscoting, and wood-hewn furniture are more cottage-cozy than cosmo-chic, but judging from the crowds, Brooklynites love their urban escape---right down to the fireplace in the back. Under the din of conversation and pop music, a tiny open kitchen lets you watch as the chef shucks fresh oysters or constructs the house panini made of hot peppers, Polish bacon (Poland---who knew?), mortadella, cheese and a sweet quince sauce. The menu is small, as befits the space, but full of diverse flavors. Equally bold is the wine menu, which includes a fair selection of worldly wines ranging from the known to the obscure---such as a Croatian vintage. The fizzy, fruity yet dry Lambrusco goes well with the panini. On hot days, a mildly sweet German Gewürztraminer hits the spot. Who knows, you might just find cottage life to your liking.
