In the at once cosmopolitan and provincial neighborhood where a Brazilian grill can be found on one corner and Spanish tapas down the block, it was only a matter of time before a Portuguese restaurant found its way to Astoria. The dark red, gold and glass exterior and casually intimate interior create a bistro-like feel while the menu of grilled seafood and meat dishes recalls, not surprisingly, the influences of Italian, Brazilian and Spanish cuisine. For a taste of something more "purely" Portuguese, begin with the caldo verde, a soup of potato purée, collard greens and Portuguese sausage. Of the entrées, the carne de porco alentejana, pork and clam stew, is hearty and robust, the combination of pork and clams an unconventional but nevertheless winning combination. The wine list is a globe-spinning anthology, but includes some nice selections from Portugal.
