Dunbar's Creole Cooking Description:
For years, the inexpensive food and warm hospitality served up at Dunbar's earned this small soul food restaurant a devoted following across a wide swath of the city. Everyone from cops to university professors seemed to show up at its down-at-the-heels dining room for fried chicken, stuffed bell peppers, greens and sweet potatoes. When the levee failures swamped its Freret Street storefront location, Dunbar's future looked grim. But then nearby Loyola University offered proprietor Celestine Dunbar a spot in its law school's cafeteria. Loyola can now boast the unique honor of having a cafeteria that serves pork chops, chicken fried to-order and gumbo loaded with crabs and andouille sausage.
