Stella! Description:
Chef-owner Scott Boswell's daily changing menu deals more in razzle-dazzle and fusion flavors than simplicity. Boswell instead strives for intriguing, memorable dishes. The derring-do almost always pays off, as with the audacious duck five ways or caramelized escargots under savory lavender meringues. Over the years, Boswell has constantly refined his cooking, and now Japanese influences may be detected in his ingredient choices and preparations. The restaurant takes stylish advantage of the French Quarter's old-world atmosphere. The main room at the rear is totally old-world, and the brick walls, soft colors and lovely, pocket-size courtyard just outside all strike the right nostalgic notes. Table service is formal but friendly, and the moderate-size list of wines shows some thought. The restaurant's name, of course, references one of the two female characters from Tennessee Williams' New Orleans-based play, "A Streetcar Named Desire." Boswell's more casual eatery, "Stanley," just down the street, is named for the male protagonist from the same play.
