GW Fins Description:
Fish and shellfish flown in from around the world are the calling cards of this consistent and sophisticated seafood specialist in the French Quarter. A menu overhaul has positively enhanced an already impressive selection. From the wood-grilled New Bedford sea scallops with mushroom risotto, to the Chilean sea bass braised in hot and sour shrimp stock, chef Tenney Flynn's preparations are unique to this part of the country. Cold-smoked oysters, a truly standout dish, come sizzling, to be dipped in lemon butter. Swordfish in a crust of cashews and peppercorns is enriched by a veal jus. Jumbo lump crab cakes get zip from a side of spicy Asian slaw. Vegetables are winners too, as in wood grilled eggplant with onions, pepper and feta cheese. Desserts are fine, in particular the apple pie, baked to order in a fine crust, fairly glows with flavor. The wine list is more than serviceable, and the courteous waiters show evidence of proper training. The décor of the big, circular dining room---with cheery artworks that have a seafood theme---is colorful and energetic without being intimidating. Noise is muffled by carpeting. G W Fins is a sophisticated, urban dining room for grown-ups.
