Claiming bragging rights as the birthplace in the mid-1930s of the New Orleans-style steak---featuring charbroiled Prime beef served in sizzling, seasoned butter---is Crescent City Steak House. The menu remains utterly basic, which is just fine for dévotées to its manly rib-eyes and New York strips or its porterhouse steaks, the kitchen's specialty. Ignore some of the trimmings, such as the soggy, flavorless shrimp cocktail, but jump on the hand-cut fries. The restaurant retains the same timeless feel it maintained since the Great Depression. The main dining room breathes a nostalgic ambience, and the curtained "cheaters" booths remain the best seats in the house for those on a discreet rendezvous. Though technically not open for weekend lunch, the restaurant begins serving steaks by 4 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays for early dinners.
