This sandwich with salad aspirations is one of the Sicilian-American community's gifts to New Orleans culinary culture. Here's the deal: Loaves of soft, sesame-studded bread are filled with ham, salami, mortadella, mozzarella and a marinated chopped green olive salad. Legend holds that Central Grocery is the muffaletta's oldest purveyor. Savor yours either at a counter on the premises, or a bench somewhere in the Vieux Carré. Half-sandwiches may be ordered, and these are plenty for two. Efficiency in keeping the omnipresent line moving takes precedence over small talk and chitchat here.
