Cafe Reconcile Description:
While it's not in the best neighborhood, Café Reconcile nevertheless packs them in, every day. Power lunchers share space with ladies who lunch and curious tourists to sample the fried catfish, smothered pork chops, crawfish bisque and shrimp Creole. Formed by local church leaders, Café Reconcile is a restaurant with a mission: to serve as a job-training program giving at-risk youth real experience in the hospitality industry and help them get their lives on track. But it is the cooking first and foremost that has made the place a favorite among New Orleanians of all stripes. The chicken salad is made from the whole bird, dark meat included, and we know people who don't eat roast beef po' boys anyplace else. You have to stand in line for Thursday's creamy white beans with shrimp, and the chicken and sausage gumbo is one to remember. Service is friendly, and much better than you might expect from a training facility. Save room for the bananas Foster bread pudding.
