Bywater Bar-B-Q Description:
Ask locals where to find good barbecue in town and you may be met with some blank stares. Conspicuously rare in New Orleans, good barbecue may well take a back seat to the town's abundant local seafood and Creole cookery. While the fare here may not win prizes in a Memphis or Austin cook-off, it can certainly hold its own if you are longing for smoked meat. In the small dining room, pulled pork, chicken and ribs come dripping with a sweet red sauce-marinade that's a close relative of ketchup. Sides include garden-variety coleslaw, beans and greens. While the pizza is completely forgettable, the desserts are not: multi-layered home-baked red velvet cakes and German chocolate cakes are always on display at the end of the bar, and each tastes as good as it looks. Weekend brunches feature imaginative omelets and quiches. Somewhat incongruous to barbecue, the restaurant is housed in an old, colorfully decorated Bywater townhouse complete with a small, lush, practically hidden garden patio.
