Angelo Brocato Description:
If the interior of Angelo Brocato's reminds you of an old ice cream parlor, that's because it is. The palace of sweets dates to 1905, although it has had several facelifts since then, and survived a couple of major hurricanes. A small brass plaque on the front door attests to Katrina's waterline, the storm's only reminder. Angelo Brocato's ices, creamy gelati, traditional Italian cookies and old-fashioned atmosphere tap into New Orleans' strong Sicilian heritage more palpably than perhaps any other establishment. Standard Italian ice flavors join such specialties as grapefruit, Louisiana strawberry and satsuma. Homemade ice cream fashioned from Italy's Baci hazelnut chocolate candy is a masterpiece of milk fat and the tri-color slices of spumoni are classic. About that line outside the door: It's worth the wait, and you'll always meet some interesting folks.
