Makeda Description:
One of New Jersey's first Ethiopian restaurants, Makeda sets a style that is evocative and welcoming in its two dining rooms---one with colorful basket-weave tables called mossobs where patrons sit on rosewood stools, share a communal plate and dine in traditional Ethiopian fashion, and another with tables covered in linen adjacent to an upholstered banquette. Here, patrons dine from individual plates while bathed in the soft glow of candlelight. Order fit-fit---a vegetable entrée consisting of finely chopped tomatoes, onion and jalapeño combined with Ethiopian spices and then tossed with a bit of injera (Ethiopian bread). The bread is essential to scoop up and enfold food, since eating in true Ethiopian style means eating without utensils. There are seafood, meat and poultry entrées, but it is the vegetables dishes that shine. The limited wine list is well chosen with vintages from southern climes such as South Africa, Chile and Australia.
