City House Description:
City House may pride itself on a mastery of Italian tradition, but its most remarkable assets are within walking distance: herbs from the back garden, handmade pasta and an in-house charcuterie. Fresh Tennessee meat and produce is everywhere on the menu, from catfish (yes, you read that right) to tomatoes. Standouts are the bread gnocchi with cauliflower ragù, and the simple but addictive pizza with belly ham, oregano and Grana Padano. On the enticing appetizer list, consider the tri-tip steak with turnip greens and Parmesan or the gemelli with mackerel and fennel. For dessert, try the lemon pound cake panino with apple butter. You won't soon forget it. Food such as this begs for stout, earthy wines, and you'll find many such varieties on the list. Italy is particularly well-represented, as you might expect. The dining room can get loud, so in warmer months head outside to the patio and soak in the well-weathered nineteenth-century architecture of Nashville's first suburb. Sitting at the chef's bar is also a good idea, as you might be privy to the occasional taste of what's coming out of the kitchen.
