Vignola Description:
Contemporary decor, set against exposed brick walls. Owned by the same owners of Cinque Terre, this restaurant is a more causal Italian experience. Prices are on par with local area restaurants.
Artisanal and local ingredients inform executive chef Lee Skawinksi's rustic Italian cuisine; indeed, Vignola is named for a tiny Italian town the chef visits to bring back his gastronomic concepts and whimsies. His antipasti give hints of the elements in sun, wind and sea and the first-rate wine list---and beer list---offer selections not available elsewhere in Maine. The restaurant has a striking interior: wine-bottle chandeliers hang from the lofty ceiling and you can people-watch through the large windows. Open late, Vignola is also one of the best places in the city to get a drink and snack with friends. After a night out, the pizza is just right. The crust is wafer-thin and crisp, a good complement to velvety cheese. Hand-rolled gnocchi with Gorgonzola cream is a dream as is the napoleon layered with lavender mint cookies and white chocolate mousse.
