Bar Lola Description:
Bar Lola is one of two Tapas restaurants in Portland. Formally 100 Congress, this intimate sized restaurant prices are on par with area establishments.
A short walk from the typical tourist path, this down-to-earth gem rivals it's elegant neighbors Blue Spoon and The Front Room, but its funky, artsy vibe adds a charm many restaurants lack. It's run by a team whose experience ranges from casual lunch spots to Portland's renowned Fore Street, and the comings and goings of old buddies adds a lively bustle to the stylish atmosphere. Gargantuan sunflowers decorate the small tables, as do the little dishes that accumulate throughout the meal. The menu is comprised of reasonably priced small, medium and large "bites" that encourage diners to linger and share. Then again, dishes such as roasted olives with a tangy citrus twist and warm, pudding-thick polenta with sweet caramelized onions are so tasty that you may not want to. Indeed, as chefs Josh Potocki, Christian Kryger and Guy Hernandez riff off each other's ideas, the results just get more whimsical---and generally more worthy, as with fleshy anchovies balanced on thick potato chips. Meanwhile, the wine list offers more good choices under $35 than just about any spot in town.
