Koda Sushi Description:
On a stretch of Sunset Boulevard occupied by several notable eateries (Tantra, Madame Matisse) sits this sleek sushi bar, dressed up in a hip palette of black, grey and blue. Locals huddle at black linen-topped tables in the modern art-filled dining room or on the rear patio, while purists take their chances at the sushi bar. Traditional sushi and sashimi and contemporary rolls are well executed and artistically plated, and dishes like halibut carpaccio (drizzled in hot garlic sauce), scallop sushi with spicy chile oil, or tartare of engawa (halibut fin) demonstrate the ambitions of the young chefs. Also interesting are a number of vegetarian rolls incorporating enoki mushrooms, artichoke hearts, broccoli, cauliflower and tofu. Entrées include smoked squab with oyster-mushroom dressing or shrimp-stuffed tuna with mango and basil cream sauce. Prices are reasonable and the service is earnest at this neighborhood restaurant.
