Café Des Amis Description:
Sitauted down an alley (opposite the stage door of the Royal Opera House), the Café is ground floor with some pavement seating, and has a cellar wine bar.
Caters mostly for the pre/post theatre trade, so fills and empties periodically - can be spooky. Low lighting and uses a lot of red and black in the deco
Although one of the oldest wine bars in London, it's a smart place with a contemporary décor which attracts the theatre and opera crowd as well as visitors to the capital. The wide-ranging menu is a real mix and match, taking in the likes of French onion soup, oysters or duck foie gras and fig jam under "les classiques" and spinach and ricotta ravioli with crab vinaigrette under "les modernes." Classic mains run from poached smoked haddock with fried egg to calf's liver; go modern with Moroccan lamb tagine. Downstairs, you'll find the wine bar patronised by much of the chorus and orchestra from the neighbouring Opera House, particularly as it stays open to 1am. Set 2 courses £14.50.
