Just St James Description:
Just St. James is a large and impressive restaurant, but it should be; the original premises housed a bank. Now, with a huge refurbishment, the hallowed halls resound to the sounds of people enjoying themselves in the different spaces which offer bars, a restaurant and private party rooms rather than the sound of cash being counted. The cooking has gone up a notch or two with the emphasis on modern British dishes like smoked eel and cucumber jelly tian with a watercress salad on the side and confit pigs' cheek, with baked apple and a balsamic glaze, which may be ordered as starters. From the main course, seasonal winter offerings might include the classic fillet of Beef Wellington with roast potatoes and glazed carrots (the type of food those long-gone bank managers would have loved) as well as a more modish sea bream with roast pepper and caperberry salsa. There's a first-rate grill section and a reasonable vegetarian choice. Set 2 course lunch & dinner £19.50, 3 courses £24.50.
