Izakaya Wasa Description:
Proprietor Bronnie Lee, who also owns Wasa Sushi and Hamamori, is behind this much-needed Japanese tavern restaurant at the Irvine Spectrum Center. The interior is casual, clean and contemporary with white walls, dark woods, fancy chandeliers and highly artistic touches. Izakaya Wasa is definitely a place to relax, converse and enjoy small plates to share along with sushi specialties and, of course, saké and Japanese beer. Sample Wasa's rock shrimp tempura with spicy garlic ponzu sauce, grilled asparagus wrapped in thin slices of rib-eye or its signature spicy tuna tartare with wasabi sour cream. Other good choices are the marinated pork belly, Maui onion salad, adedashi tofu, diced garlic steak and a variety of yakitori. Be sure to save room for the tempura green tea ice cream dessert.

Review :
My husband and I are big Wasa sushi fans. However, we both agree that Izakaya Wasa does not live up to the standards set by the original Wasa (Sushi on the Bluffs). The fish is definitely of a lower grade than that in the original Wasa restaurant. I understand that the audience in the Spectrum may not be as demanding (more teenagers and college students), as the Wasa on the Bluffs clientelle. However, the prices are just as high for much worse quality of food. If you want good sushi for that price you would do much better going to the Newport Beach or the El Toro locations.
