Ruggles Cafe Bakery Description:
Take a number and prepare to wait in line at this counter-service café where Susan Molzan's pastries shine---in particular, her famous white chocolate bread pudding, made with buttered baguette slices and vanilla cream. She's also the mastermind behind the Domino cake, layered with white and dark chocolate mousse, as well as the apple spice cake, the chocolate crème brûlée and the tres leches, all found at any of the many Ruggles operations in town. With such a lineup, it's no surprise that the West University area ladies-who-lunch here nibble on salads before the main attraction: desserts. Still, you should try some of the rich and creamy soups, the bounteous salads, and sandwich offerings. A tasty char-grilled Angus burger is served on a fresh whole-wheat bun with a side of steak fries. The grilled ranch chicken sandwich is a good one for kids, and adults like the Cuban smoked pork panini hot from the grill, slathered with chipotle mayo. If eating light, you may be better off just having the signature roasted tomato-basil soup and then moving on to what you really came for---dessert.
