Backstreet Cafe Description:
Backstreet Café's quaint renovated two-story home sports a sizeable deck in the backyard, which sings during the jazz brunch every Sunday. Backstreet's favorite entrées are joined by such breakfast traditions as gingerbread waffles; frittata; and migas, eggs scrambled with corn tortilla strips, serrano peppers and tomatoes. Standout appetizers are the smoked corn crab cakes in citrus beurre blanc; sherried wild mushroom soup with Gorgonzola toast; and salmon-and-lobster rolls with ginger-soy-scallion sauce. Chef Hugo Ortega has become the king of crusted entrées with such inventions as Parmesan-and-sesame-crusted shrimp, mustard-crusted salmon and pecan-crusted chicken. But the hands-down favorite is the meatloaf tower. Aptly named, it is usually leaning a little by the time it arrives, thanks to the precarious stacking of garlic mashed potatoes and sautéed spinach that is crowned with the wholesome slice of meatloaf and ladled with mushroom gravy. It may not look like Mom's, but it tastes even better.
