Sushi Raku Description:
Take a contemporary Japanese chef with a love of fresh, local Texas ingredients and toss in a sexy décor and you get Midtown's Sushi Raku. The first floor of this mid-rise building is dressed in sparse but elegant reds, including a weighty red silk rope that drapes the wall between the bar and main dining room. Grab a spot at the sushi bar or snuggle up in a booth and prepare for an East meets Tex feast. Don't bother with the tome-size menu. Just ask chef Taka Sekiguchi to send out some of his seasonal small plates; most dishes are served tapas-style for table sharing. Sekiguchi blends the best of Japan with Texas trimmings; daily fresh local fish and a weekly shipment from Tokyo's famous Tsukiji fish market, Texas Kobe beef, pork, and local microgreens and seasonal vegetables comprise the dishes. We recommend the tontoro, 12-hour braised Berkshire pork belly with Texas pecans, and the subtle mesquite-smoked salmon topped with Boursin cheese and fat roe swimming in sweet corn purée. The freshness of the sushi and sashimi are only slightly enhanced by the fresh grated wasabi. A full bar, wines and sakés, plus desserts like the salt and pepper truffles (chocolate-y treats with a wicked kick) complete the experience.
