After many years, this jewel of the Mandola family enterprises remains alive and well. Patrons frequent Damian's to harvest the feast of authentic Italian cuisine and wonderful wines in an ambience at once old-world and refreshingly new. Try the shrimp Damian, sautéed with garlic in a white wine-butter sauce; and the tableside preparation of Caesar salad. Other treasures from the sea are salmone paillard, grilled salmon topped with pesto-mushroom trifolati; and branzino salutare, grilled sea bass over creamed spinach with fried topneck clams. Hearty appetites go for such main courses as costolette alla valdostana, a veal chop stuffed with prosciutto and Fontina in a mushroom-Marsala sauce. Whether light or robust, all the meals start well with the verde Gorgonzola, a salad punched up with a blue cheese-and-walnut dressing; or funghi al Montalbano, a grilled portobello mushroom topped with fresh crab meat and a white wine-butter sauce.
