In southeastern Turkey, this town is believed to be the city of Haran, home of Biblical Abraham. In 53 BC, the Roman general Crassus and his legionaries were defeated by the Parthians at the Battle of Carrae. There are gates, ruins, a citadel and the remains of the Umayyad Mosque. Plan a few hours there. Another attraction are the villagers' "beehive" houses made of mud. 425 mi/685 km southeast of Ankara.
