Café Alsace Description:
Alsace, France, native Benedicte Cooper does a thriving business based on the traditional bistro fare of France. From Alsace comes the classic homemade spätzle presented in two versions. The tasty and creamy house-made chicken liver pâté and good salads are draws. Topnotch choucroute is accented with smoked meats and sausages, the dish an icon of the simple, hearty fare of the countryside. Catch the cassoulet when it's available. There may be rabbit from time to time, as Cooper takes a crack at unusual and not-often-seen dishes from Alsace. Occasionally, there might be coq au Riesling, for instance. We love the way with soups here, light and flavorful in summer, more substantial in cooler weather. Most desserts are equally home-style, with profiteroles, chocolate mousse, crème brûlée or a fresh fruit tart. Wines and beers from Alsace are a specialty on this short, but very worthwhile, wine list. Brunch, while not a French concept, is well executed here, with stuffed savory crêpes, for instance.
