Cafe Pastis Description:
Some call it cramped and noisy, others snug and lively, but most agree that the Provençale cuisine served at this café is as close to Parisian bistro food as you're going to find in South Miami. The owners are from Marseilles so it makes sense that the bouillabaisse would excel---they also pour plenty of pastis here, the 90-proof anise-flavored apéritif that is Marseilles' other main export. Start with homemade pâté or spinach salad with roasted pears and Roquefort. Sumptuous entrées include duck braised in cassis and red wine and chicken breast cooked with apricots and green olives. Homemade desserts like tarte Tatin and raspberry-custard tartlet are final proof that big flavors come in small dining rooms.
