Cactus Cantina Description:
Guests are primarily young professionals from the neighborhood, though some tourists from the nearby National Cathedral do come by. The interior is decked out with Tex-Mex artifacts like Indian headdresses, Stetson hats, and other antique clothes and weapons. In warm weather the more popular spot is the outdoor deck on Wisconsin Avenue.
Cactus Cantina applies a 10% service charge on take-out orders, and a 15% gratuity on groups of eight or more. Seperate checks are not available.
Cactus Cantina is a colorful and always-crowded spot to take the family for lusty Tex-Mex in Cleveland Park. Tortillas are made in an elaborate glassed-in machine that may interest the kids while they're waiting for a table. Once seated, don't limit yourself to the combination platters. Some of the best offerings come from the mesquite grill---barbecued quail, grilled shrimp, crusty spareribs and the inevitable fajitas. Start your meal with a tamale, soft and flavorful inside its cornhusk wrapping and stuffed with smoky shreds of pork. Portions are generous: Expect enough food for a doggie bag. The margaritas here, made from a mix, are a disappointment. Have Mexican beer instead.
