Bistrot Lepic & Wine Bar Description:
Chef and owner Bruno Fortin has arguably transplanted France into Georgetown, with Bon Appetit naming Bistrot Lepic one of the top 10 new restaurants in the country, and the awarding it the honor of the best new restaurant in Washington when it opened in 1995.
Though the menu is frequently changing, a potential meal could start with black trompet mushroom risotto with fresh snails, an entree of salmon in potato crust, fresh grapes and ouzo grape sauce, and end with one of the chef's dessert creations.
This cheerful French restaurant has won the hearts of those lucky enough to live in the neighborhood. If you want to make sure that you can occupy one of the 40-odd seats, it's best to call in advance, for the place fills up fast with regulars. The chef has constructed a menu that is short, direct and depends on seasonal fruits and vegetables. He prepares such interesting basics as onion tart or trout salad to start and follows with salmon in a potato crust and sautéed sea scallops. At lunchtime, we've thoroughly enjoyed the spring garden salad with grilled shrimp. In the evening, you will likely find grilled trout, crusted salmon, and in cold weather, a cassoulet with duck confit.
