B. Smith's Description:
Situated in the hall, at Washington Union Station, where the President's trains once stopped, B. Smith's marble interior and high ceilings can make it a noisy spot, especially during the lunch hours. Still, the well-regarded fine Southern (Cajun/Creole) cuisine continue to attract a diverse crowd of Hill staffers, local businesspeople and tourists. B. Smith's also hosts live musical performances, including a Sunday jazz brunch, and private parties for groups of 10 to 400.
If you haven't stopped in for a splendid Southern meal at this colossal Union Station eatery, you've missed one of Capitol Hill's major power-lunch scenes. At other times, expect to rub shoulders with suburbanites, tourists or city folk enjoying a rollicking time. Start big with jambalaya, deep-fried catfish sticks or the Southern classic, fried green tomatoes. For more of the South, tackle a catfish sandwich, a shrimp po' boy or even the Tennessee-style ribs. Size is a big feature here. Slightly smaller dishes include a hearty seafood gumbo or the Swamp Thing, a dish of mixed seafood over Southern-style greens. End with a huge portion of strawberry shortcake that even two people can't finish. This is the same Ms. B. Smith from TV, books and the Web who offers advice on everything from gardening and home decorating to cooking. She also owns several restaurants in New York.
