B. Smith's Description:
Situated in the hall, at Washington Union Station, where the President's trains once stopped, B. Smith's marble interior and high ceilings can make it a noisy spot, especially during the lunch hours. Still, the well-regarded fine Southern (Cajun/Creole) cuisine continue to attract a diverse crowd of Hill staffers, local businesspeople and tourists. B. Smith's also hosts live musical performances, including a Sunday jazz brunch, and private parties for groups of 10 to 400.
If you haven't stopped in for a splendid Southern meal at this colossal Union Station eatery, you've missed one of Capitol Hill's major power-lunch scenes. At other times, expect to rub shoulders with suburbanites, tourists or city folk enjoying a rollicking time. Start big with jambalaya, deep-fried catfish sticks or the Southern classic, fried green tomatoes. For more of the South, tackle a catfish sandwich, a shrimp po' boy or even the Tennessee-style ribs. Size is a big feature here. Slightly smaller dishes include a hearty seafood gumbo or the Swamp Thing, a dish of mixed seafood over Southern-style greens. End with a huge portion of strawberry shortcake that even two people can't finish. This is the same Ms. B. Smith from TV, books and the Web who offers advice on everything from gardening and home decorating to cooking. She also owns several restaurants in New York.

Ok, let's talk about food: Lucky for us, we happened upon Happy Hour! 2 of my favorite words. Yes! B. Smith's has a happy hour that offers special cocktails and certain small plate items.
We ordered Thai-Spiced Wings, Catfish Fingers (nuggets really), Mac-N-Cheese and Collard Greens. Overall, our food was amazing. The sauce on the wings was phenomenal and they were cooked to perfection (no pinkness near the bone). The catfish fingers were fried to perfection and lightly seasoned. I could've used a little more seasoning but they were still so good. Oh, if you're like me, you like hot sauce on your catfish. The sauce they had is just too hot though, which for me, takes away from the flavor of what you're eating. But hey, if you like that type of heat, then go for it. The mac-n-cheese was pretty good, not totally bomb out of this world but good. It was nice and cheesy and had good flavor. Um, let me tell you about those greens though - can I just say that they were the best greens that I've ever dared to try at a restaurant. These greens were fresh too, not canned - fresh. Somebody de-stemmed, washed and cut them before cooking (just like I do). I wanted to take some home and freeze them, they were just that good.
Bartender - Nathan waited on us. His service was exceptional. He was cool but maintained a professional interaction with us that was both comforting and knowledgeable. He knew what he was talking about too and makes a mean Apple Martini.
We will return and go directly to the bar area.

Our group of 5 people visited this restaurant over the weekend. We are from Ohio and were in town to see a play at the Kennedy Center. All of us were very disappointed with the service and the food. The collard greens didn't taste fresh. None of us wanted to eat them, and one person sent hers back to the kitchen. The Mac & cheese was not cheesy enough, and the fish was okay. Once our food order was taken and delivered, we did not see our waiter unless we had someone get him for us. The atmosphere was very nice, but I will not be visiting this restaurant the next time I come to DC.
