Zipangu Description:
As if Orange County weren't trendy enough already, it also has this self-consciously cool, ultra-modern sushi bar. Located in The Lab in Costa Mesa, Zipangu's décor feels a bit underground with its dark interior, half-moon sushi bar, recycled woods and minimalist design. Start by requesting a refreshing martini inspired by the Zodiac signs. Interestingly, this thoroughly modern restaurant serves up both traditional omakase-style sushi and an entire menu of over-the-top Asian-fusion creations. But don't be put off. Your best bet is to order up several dishes from the reasonably-priced Asian tapas menu such as the jalapeño yellowtail, Kurobuta pork misoyaki or roast duck with foie gras. Try not to miss the "Oh, My God!" roll, which comes looking like something from outer space, but tastes like heaven with its shrimp tempura, crab meat and tuna topped with a spicy aïoli. You could make a meal from the tapas or roll menu, but there's also more Westernized entrée selections like chicken teriyaki, grilled salmon and a New York strip steak.
