Momocho Description:
Most Mexican-food chains feature moderate prices and robust fare, but the food runs a bland gamut from tacos to burritos. In a tradition-jarring step, Momocho, a self-described "mod Mex" cantina, offers artful, intense, and upscale plates---such as coffee and ancho-braised beef brisket or pepita-crusted trout. Free of sombreros, piñatas and guitar-strumming mariachi, this bi-level restaurant serves up a half-dozen types of fresh margaritas infused with real fruit purée in tall, skinny glasses. If taste-testing sounds particularly enjoyable, try the guacamole sampler (we recommend pineapple, goat cheese and blue crab) which arrives alongside a basket of warm, fried tortilla chips. The machaca and pato taquitos are not to be missed. If you've reached the end of the meal, however, steer clear of the clichéd---and less than delicious---fried ice cream. Instead, try the apricot and cinnamon bread pudding. It's a warm, sweet and soothing way to round out a modern Mexican meal. The restaurant also offers a large selection of fine tequilas, Mexican beer and Spanish wine.
