Cibo Matto Description:
There's considerable buzz about this showy, second-level dining room with a name that suggests the food is "crazy." We're not sure the moniker applies, though the setting---a sexy, conversation-worthy fresco collage on the ceiling, high-backed, white leather banquettes, and private entrance---sure does attract a cool, food-knowledgeable crowd. Of course, the menu---presided over by Todd Stein (ex-mk), also of Roof upstairs---actually isn't too out there; it's just plain good. First-rate salumi with house-pickled market veggies and creamy burrata salad with apricots show seasonal swagger. Dynamite bucatini carbonara---loaded with cracked pepper and nutty Pecorino Romano and topped with a runny duck egg---alone is worth the stop. Surprisingly, caramelized, grilled chicken with white beans and escarole is an entrée highlight. But bone-in halibut with heirloom tomato panzanella---one of many fish options on the sea-plucked menu---couldn't be fresher. Finish with a cheese flight or warm, peppered plum cake (since lemon-ricotta donuts prove disappointingly dry). Small-production wines and craft cocktails (some herb-infused) are a perfect match.
