Cafe Matou Description:
Café Matou ("matou" means alley cat in French) is a nice little restaurant---not to mention an ambitious one. While the culinary style may be bourgeois, the appeal is definitely tout le monde---enjoyable for everyone. Owner-chef Charles Socher---who crafts a super-seasonal, ever-changing menu---has a handle on this place. His assiette de charcuterie is a wonderful assortment of pâtés. The fromage de chèvre (baked goat cheese) is luscious, but not always available. The lamb shank is satisfying, and the pain chocolat (bread pudding) is a winner. Other finds might include halibut rillettes with smoked lake trout and salmon, pan-broiled duck with balsamic-dried cherry glaze and bouillabaisse. We also enjoy the subtle, casual ambience---brick walls, hardwood floors, high ceilings---and the professional service.
