Formerly known as the Tabernacle ARP Church, The Great Aunt Stella Center was designed and built in 1914by James M. McMichael, the architect also responsible for the churches now known as Spirit Square, the
Artists Colony, and the Afro-American Cultural Center. As a
performing arts venue, it possesses a sense
intimacy, interaction, and spirituality. It is designed in a sweeping curve with dark wooden pews, a full working
pipe organ, and magnificent stained glass windows throughout. It has been fitted with state of the art sound and
lighting sysyetms and has excellent acoustics.
Concessions are available (no alcohol) and are served in the cafe area only.
The main entrance is through a street level day located on the side of the building next ot the street and parking lot. Enter here for the Board room, the Green Room, and the Cafe. to enter the Sanctuary, come up the steps in front of the building facing the corner of McDowell and Elizabeth.
Driving direction to The Great Aunt Stella Center:
From I-77,take the Trade St. East exit and head towards uptown. Pass through the middle of uptown to McDowell Street. Cross over McDowell (Trade St. becomes Elizabeth Avenue:the Center is immediately on the right.
Within Charlotte:
Coming from Presbyterian Hospital,take Elizabeth St. towards town. Go past CPCC and cross over Kings Drive. The Center will be on the left one block up.
From Uptown, travel east on Trade St. Cross McDowell St. (the name changes to Elizabeth Ave). The Center is immediately on the right.
