Jujube Description:
At first glance you may notice nothing unusual about this colorful but sparsely decorated eatery. Its subtly tasteful décor, featuring blown-up photos of Asian street scenes, barely hints at the pleasures yet to unfold. The front bar offers several bottles of top grade saké, unusual ales, and intriguingly named bar drinks. Another bar opens to the kitchen with a view of the chef-proprietor, Charlie Deal, in his element. Start with his spicy oyster mushroom curry soup, then try the crisp tempura prawns and okra with a tomato and scallion conserve. Choose from seasonal main courses such as crab and shrimp cakes served over a corn and green chile curry, Cornish hen with polenta and plum-walnut pesto, or lemon grass grilled hanger steak and spicy peanut sauce cooled down by a cucumber salad. Deal masterfully explores Vietnamese, Thai and Chinese cuisines with an occasional touch of Italy and France playfully thrown in (Jujube cassoulet). The wine list is modest, but carefully composed of bottles that complement the heat of Asian flavors. Adventurous foodies like this unusual eatery, but if you prefer traditional American versions of Asian food, you may not appreciate Jujube's adventurous spirit.
