Carleton Place, Ont, Town, pop 9083 (2001c), 8483 A (1996c), 7432 (1991c), 6541 (1986cA), area 8.83 km2, inc 1890, located on the Mississippi R, 45 km SW of OTTAWA, was founded (1819) by William Morphy and his sons. The name is a corruption of Carlton Place, a famous square in Glasgow, Scotland. Lumber mills and manufacturing, especially of textiles and stoves, drew power from nearby falls in the past.
