The Blue Room Description:
An upscale eatery, offering creative New American cusine, emphasizing grilled and roasted meats along with seasonal vegetables. Located in the basement of the One Kendall Square complex, which is near the intersection of Broadway and Hampshire Streets.
The Sunday brunch buffet offers a range of breakfast foods, along with grilled and roasted meats, and some Asian-inspired dishes.
In the mid-1990s, along with East Coast Grill and Rialto, The Blue Room foretold the culinary future of Cambridge; today, all three are permanent fixtures in the city's ever-thriving yet idiosyncratic dining scene---perhaps too mellow to be downright edgy, but too smart to be anything less than progressive. The Blue Room in particular has stayed the course despite several changes of ownership; and it has maintained its jazzy vibe despite its industrial-park surroundings. There are copper-topped tables, wooden booths set back with views of the open kitchen, and a classy bar, home to one of the most adventurous yet food-friendly wine lists in town---which is moderately priced to boot. Chef Jorge Lopes has preserved his predecessor and mentor Steve Johnson's touch of New England restraint, sourcing local vegetables and farm-raised meats and keeping plates spare. At the same time, foreign influences continue to prevail in a kitchen that braises short ribs with ancho chilies, then pairs them with down-home hominy, or de-Frenchifies duck confit in port reduction with tsatsuma, mizuna and kumquat. The famed Sunday brunch is likewise vibrant. If Cambridge's culinary evolution were to stop right here, we'd be content.
