Aldo's Description:
The menu here sticks to generic Italian food, from linguine marinara to lasagna bolognese, cappellini to calamari with capers and garlic. Which wouldn't be a problem if the food were consistently good. Unfortunately, the quality hovers between mediocre and average, with occasional dips to well below average. Located on State Street in the heart of downtown, Aldo's caters mostly to unadventurous wanderers: tourists drawn to familiar flavors and an attractive courtyard, on-the-town locals who can't be bothered with trendy restaurants or creative cuisine. The space, however, is lovely---a classic Spanish style building that dates back to the mid-1800s. Live music and a gurgling fountain add to the atmosphere, and on a good night a nice bottle of wine paired with low expectations renders an enjoyable dining experience. Your best options are simple pizzas such as the quatro formaggi or the smoked cheese ravioli with grilled chicken in cilantro pesto, pine nuts and tomatoes. Service tends to be casual, belying the outward appearance of a fine neighborhood restaurant.
