Robata Grill & Sake Bar Description:
Movie producers may want to scout Robata's cave-like chambers for their next film. The atmosphere is part of the reason Robata, now in its third decade, has not lost its popularity with Carmel Japanese enthusiasts. Same goes for the forever-gracious service. A number of specialty rolls augment par-for-the-course maki and nigiri offerings. We recommend the Stan roll: avocado and tempura with eel. Delicious sushi alternatives abound; there's a vast selection of grilled items and other stars stand-out like deep-fried Japanese eggplant and various seaweed salads. Stick to the saké bar---and stay far away from the wines by the glass. Those lacquered wooden benches may have been so easy to slide into, but sit for an hour or so and slide out with a backache (maybe they were made for a movie set).
