Corkscrew Cafe Description:
Walter Georis, chef-owner of Carmel's Casanova, also operates Corkscrew. He's a vintner, too, so his name on Georis Winery next door is no coincidence. Terra cotta tile, painted furniture and eclectic décor reflect the earthy spirit of country living. There is no shortage of corkscrews here; besotted collectors will drool. The menu is worthy of similar mannerisms. Preparations rely on what is fresh and many ingredients hail from the substantial garden across the road. Pair green bean salad with duck-and-pistachio pâté that comes with cornichons, pickled onions and grilled bread. In the warm summer months, sit out on the patio with the signature salad of heirloom tomatoes and mozzarella di bufala. As for entrées, try the oven-fried free-range chicken or omelet of the day. Linger like you are in Provence with a taste of cheese and a glass of Georis (the winery specializes in reds). Linger longer and Georis himself might join you.
