Sushi Bar Yoshida Description:
Sushi Bar Yoshida got its start in a tiny strip mall in Pasadena, but has recently expanded into this new, bigger space.
Opens at 5pm, and Yoshi's section of the sushi bar fills up shortly afterward.
Yoshida's offers the standard sushi, as well as specialties like pompano, where he serves you two pieces of sushi from a tiny fish, then brings you the fried bones in a tangy sauce a few minutes later.
This unpretentious storefront restaurant offers a blonde wood sushi bar, tables topped with burgundy linen and some framed French impressionist prints. An expansion added a dining room with a prominent fountain, but waits are still not unusual. However, the sushi, not the décor, has always been the draw here: very high quality bluefin toro, Japanese scallops, uni, ankimo, sweet shrimp and more. Items such as lobster tempura, squid salad and occasional jellyfish sashimi are worth considering as well. This may be ritzy San Marino but prices are a bit lower than many Westside sushi bars of comparable quality.
