With lovely Pacific views and interesting Del Mar people-watching, Il Fornaio remains an Italian food destination. Eating on the large open-air deck is a must, as is ordering a nice glass of wine to accompany tomato-and-basil-topped bruschetta. Pizzas and pastas are the specialties here; we like the butternut squash-filled ravioli as well as the pizza Christina (made with mozzarella, prosciutto, Parmesan, mushrooms, wild arugula and white truffle oil). Hearty appetites will appreciate the calzone filled with ricotta, mozzarella, marinara sauce, ham and mushrooms. We tend to steer away from the steaks and chops and stick to what it does best: homemade breads, lasagna and rotisserie chicken.
