FlatIron Grill Description:
Hearty appetizers like 5 Wonderful Wontons stuffed with chicken and mushrooms are not standard steakhouse fare, but quite fun and a bit unusual. More classic starters include the perfectly fried calamari and vegetables with chipotle aïoli or spicy Buffalo wings. Hearty, plate-sized salads can make the meal, but most come for grilled meats. Menu choices are not limited to beef, although flat-iron and New York steaks are both offered. But baby-back ribs, chicken-under-a-brick and salmon are all part of the lineup. Surprisingly, prime rib is a midweek specialty and worthy of a special trip. Sides are unremarkable, ranging from mashed potatoes to sautéed spinach. The décor and service, however, give FlatIron a surprising edge. Dark, rustic walls are contrasted with whimsical paintings of farmyard animals by famed artist Lowell Herrero. The tongue-in-cheek artwork seems juxtaposed against the elegant architecture, but coupled with pointed and attentive service, sets the guest at ease for an enjoyable visit. The wine list offers local favorites but is hardly expansive.
