Checkers Description:
Over twenty years ago, Ron Goldin opened Checkers as an ice cream parlor and pizza joint. It is still a favorite for pizzas and calzones, but the age of the ice cream has gone and been replaced with heartier pastas, sandwiches and salads. The pizzas, with thin freshly-made crust, include both California-style, such as the goat cheese with sun-dried tomato, red onion and mozzarella cheese, as well as the more traditional margherita with fresh tomatoes, mozzarella and basil. Appetizers of steamed mussels or garlic shrimp are renowned among the regulars. Heaping pasta entrées include butternut squash ravioli with smoked chicken, candied walnuts and dried cranberries served with a savory cream sauce; or the firecracker chicken with spicy Asian sauce, garlic, ginger, scallions, black pepper, broccoli and bok choy, all served over linguini. The unassuming atmosphere with checkered tablecloths puts everyone at ease with familiar and competent service. A relatively short wine list is representative of both local producers as well as an occasional Italian surprise.
